A Month in Heaven
A Hawaiian friend of Kevin's told him that a better translation for "Kalani" is actually "heaven." Kevin and I agree that he is living up to his name. Of course, staying up for hours at nights trying to get him to fall asleep, struggling with nursing and the physical pains associated with it, changing his diaper only to have him go immediately afterwards, and worrying about his health (especially since he's been sick this week) are not what most would consider "heavenly" experiences. But the joy he has brought us in this last short month definitely is!
It is amazing how excited we get when he does something new. He is growing more alert and actively engaged with his surroundings every day. He tracks, is interested in toys, kicks and holds his head up very well, and he is becoming more and more responsive to us each day. My heart fills with joy when he looks at me, smiles, and coos. Yesterday, for the first time, he bestowed his father with his first real laugh. I could tell Kevin was like putty in his hands after that. Kevin spent the next hour trying to make him laugh again!
Because I have neglected to post sooner, here are pictures from a number of events in the last two-three weeks. As you can probably tell, Kalani is getting some meat on him - he weighed in at 9 lbs 7.8 oz last Friday!

He loved this green frog and entered into a staring contest which, as expected, the froggie won.
I love this photo of Kevin and Kalani napping together. Aren't they both so sweet?
We went to a Camp Opportunity luau and Kalani had some quality time with his daddy.
We made a special trip to visit Grandma Rebecca, a dear and sweet friend. Kalani and Rebecca had a very special connection and we will miss her.
Kalani looking quite relaxed, hanging out with his very proud Papa Sisavath
Cousin Zoe, who is two and 1/2 months older, is quite protective of Kalani already.
Grandma Carol and Kalani snuggling at our July 4th family picnic.
Kalani and Kevin enjoying fireworks, and each other, on the fourth
